Dead End for Breaker Street

The Tragedy—Newlywed and Newly Widowed

In the days following an event that shattered one of the biggest names in the modern rock world it became known that, after nearly two decades together, Stone and Kerr had recently married in a civil ceremony with no fanfare.  A clerk of courts who was present for the nuptials is quoted as saying “They came in one afternoon, very quiet and low-key like they didn’t want any special treatment. Filled out the paperwork involved and went before the judge.”  When asked about the proceedings, they added, “There was a lot of laughter. They didn’t have any witnesses with them. No friends or anything so they asked two random people that were milling about the building. It was all very impromptu.”

Phillipa Kerr, New York artist and longtime partner of Rory Stone (lead singer of Breaker Street) was to interred this morning at the Rosewood Mausoleum, part of Ferncliff Cemetery (Westerchester County, New York) in a private ceremony. While family members of the deceased declined to speak to the media, a spokesperson for Mr. Stone had this to say: “The family is deeply touched by the outpouring of sympathy from friends and fans alike. Pippa will be missed by many.”

Ms. Kerr was killed in an automobile accident last Wednesday night, on the way to an awards ceremony where Breaker Street was being honored for their continuing contributions to the music world. The artist’s chauffer-driven car was hit by commercial vehicle going well over the speed limit.  The collision proved fatal for the New York native and for the driver of the car. Her toddler son, fathered by Stone, survived without injury. Kerr was only forty-six years old.

A source close to the rocker had this to say, “…[Rory]’s just devastated. He’s completely shut down. Everyone’s worried about him.” Another person in the know has shared with us that “He won’t let the baby out of his sight.”

The Scandal—Is it reporting the news or creating shocking headlines?

The news of the accident was broken to Rory Stone and the other members of Breaker Street during the red carpet televised pre-show. An unnamed reporter from OMG (an online multi-media broadcasting service) shouted a question to the lanky singer, inquiring about Ms. Kerr’s whereabouts. Stone jokingly replied that she was running late, as usual, but was en-route only to be informed of the car crash.

In a hailstorm of questions and flashbulbs, the rock star seemed stunned and unsure whether or not he was the subject of a tasteless joke. It didn’t take long for security, the band’s manager and a representative from Serptichore Records to shepherd the band off the red carpet and into privacy where the news was confirmed.  Stone was seen getting into an escorted SUV shortly thereafter.  It is believed he was taken to a nearby hospital where he identified the bodies of his driver and that of Phillipa Kerr.

OMG is under fire for their so-called unethical means of garnering ‘first look’ footage of Stone’s reaction to the tragedy. Other celebrities and various members of respected news agencies are calling for measures to prevent further such incidents in the future. When asked for a statement regarding the matter, Stone’s camp merely issued a “no comment.”

Some are calling this an invasion of privacy; others claim that stars like Stone opt to live their lives in the public eye. But what of Ms. Kerr? The glass artist lived a much more secluded and private life than her counterpart, often declining to take part in on-screen interviews and photo shoots. Rarely did she even accompany the band on tour, many times separated from Stone for months on end. She seemed to prefer staying out of Stone’s considerable spotlight, content in recent years to focus on raising the son the couple had together.

The Broken Star—What Does This Mean for Breaker Street?

The answer, in the immediate future, is indefinite postponement of their current New England tour. Stone is the front man for the band, songwriter and often plays lead guitar. It’s well known that he often writes songs for and about Miss Kerr (Believer Girl/Pippa’s Song/This Time), is the muse now gone? With Stone now consumed with grief, it is doubtful Breaker Street will continue in its current incarnation. Would fans be content with a band fronted by someone else? Junie Cabriano seems a likely choice.
