Speaking as someone who was here for it... I don't know. Bad as it was to be here, I think it would have been worse to be away, just because of what you say-- the city's there, being hit, and you're a million miles away and can only watch? That would have torn me apart even worse, I think.

As for not fitting in, well, obviously, that's your feelings on the matter and how you feel is how you feel, but I wouldn't consider you to be an 'outsider' in any sense there. Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker, wherever you were when the towers went down.

I didn't watch much of it, from what I understand it was played and replayed constantly in the States. The coverage wasn't that...extreme where I was. Yes, it was prominent that day and in the days following but nothing like what I was told you and the rest of the country were exposed to, much like I suppose Americans treated the tube bombings in London.

It's not that I'm not a New Yorker, I was born and raised here, I've lived most of my life in one part of the city or another. And I'm not unaffected. I don't know of anyone who lives here who doesn't a least know someone who knew someone that lost their life on September 11th. We are all connected in that sense, but I don't know...I wasn't here for three years after the fact. I didn't grieve with the city in the same way that those here did. I wasn't here to watch and aid in the relief and clean up efforts. I came back to a city filled with monuments and remembrances, I didn't witness them installed. There is a disconnect there and while maybe subtle to you, I feel it.
