sandandwater: (hot stuff)

I turned this:

Into this:

What did you do this week?

That is so pretty!

Um, I didn't make anything this week, unfortunately. I did drink a lot of tea and bought a tiny cat goddess statue.

Hot tea or iced? It's been so hot here that being in the studio has been a special sort of torture.

And is there a significance to the tiny cat goddess or did you just like the way it looked?

From: [identity profile] deep-red-bells.livejournal.com
It was hot tea. I bet it is hot in your studio!

Well, the vendor said it was lucky? I mean, when I picked it up I just thought it was pretty.

Nothing wrong with that, I've picked things up just because they're pretty regardless of the symbolism. I like to think we can give objects their own meaning anyhow.

Oh, that is beautiful! What would one go for?

I have two more stories done than I did this time last week.

You know, other than the cost of materials--I really couldn't say. I don't actually sell much of my work. I give it away usually unless it's something I'm making specifically for myself.

Working on another book, are you?

Date: 2008-07-11 07:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] writer-mel.livejournal.com
Ahh. I was just thinking my mother would love something like that. It's really beautiful.

I am, yes. I have to get the last of it put together soon, too, so the editors can have at it.

From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
Give me a mailing address, I'll have it crated for you.

Can I ask what it's about or do I have to wait until it's on book stands?

Date: 2008-07-11 07:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] writer-mel.livejournal.com
Only if you give me a price, a real price.

The stories are still falling into place, but I am starting to see themes. The creative impulse, responsibility, choice. I'll know better when I see them all laid out together.

Cover the cost of materials and shipping and we're good.

You'll have to let me know when the first edition is out. I think I'd like to read it.

From: [identity profile] writer-mel.livejournal.com
All right. *gives her the address* Thank you, she'll love it.

Oh, you'll know. You'll hear the shouts of joy that it's done from your studio. No matter WHERE I am at the time. *laughs* Should be by the end of the year.

You're welcome.

I'll look forward to it. I never seem to finish actual novels any more, maybe short stories would be better.

I don't have the patience for them, so why would I expect my readers to? *grins*

Very pretty, very nice. I'm impressed. I... don't think I got anything accomplished other than reading a few books.

From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
What have you been reading?

Date: 2008-07-11 07:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zippyknowsbest.livejournal.com
Mmm, The Jew in the Lotus, which is about Judaism and Buddhism dialogue, and William Gibson's Spook Country which is fun cybershmucking about.

That's quite the variety there.

One's for my mind and soul, the other one's for my inner geek.

Date: 2008-07-11 07:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
I don't think I have an inner geek.

No? Then you're missin' out.

I think my outer dare devil might make up for it a bit.

That? Is gorgeous. Wish I had artistic talent. Unfortunately, I don't.

Date: 2008-07-11 07:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
Thank you. It's not all talent, there are years of training involved too. I was taught how to do a lot of what I actually create.

Date: 2008-07-11 07:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bookish-blonde.livejournal.com
Well, obviously, cause it's a complicated process and all that. But what you actually turn it into, you know? Styles and shapes and stuff.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
That's technique too, mostly.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bookish-blonde.livejournal.com
Yeah, but don't you have an idea of what your piece is going to look like before you start? Color, and shape and what it's going to be? Bowl or vase or basket, or whatever.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
Usually, and if that's the case it dictates what techniques to use. Bowls are formed differently from deeper vessels and so forth.

I know what you are saying, and I appreciate it, I do but really there's a lot more skill than actual talent at play here. I honestly believe anyone can be taught to do this, it just takes patience and desire. And a basic understanding of chemistry, of course.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bookish-blonde.livejournal.com
Oh, I'd be in serious trouble. I was never very good at chemistry. Or anything with a lot of math. Numbers have never been my thing.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
I don't mind them, I don't find it difficult or anything but I wouldn't go so far as to say math's fun. What you can do with it can be fun though.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bookish-blonde.livejournal.com
Yeah. *grins* I'm just happier with books.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sand-andwater.livejournal.com
I never seem to finish them any more. I get too distracted. The only place that doesn't happen is my glass studio.

Date: 2008-07-11 08:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bookish-blonde.livejournal.com
*shrugs* It happens. At least you have something you can do to get yourself focused again.
