A Photo Essay of Venezia

I keep meaning to post these, most of them taken by Marcello, a few of the decidedly amateur shots are my own handiwork, of course. I'm not sure how much most of you know about The City of Water, but it's made up of many islands and I don't live on Venice itself, but the isle of Murano instead. Murano is where the furnaces for glass making have been for centuries. All of them exiled there, to one location in case of fires. Reasonable and cheerful, no? Si.
Anyhow, this is where I am most days:

The row of houses that my bedroom window looks out toward, I love the colors, they are always so cheerful even in the gloom of dusk or during the rain. They're painted this way because they face the grand canal on their other side and are meant to be seen by the fishermen coming home after a long time away.

And this was taken from a bridge not far from Alessandro's house, the canal there is one I traverse most days. Third building on the left, you'll notice the dock is empty, it's because Marcello and I have the boat.

The famous Murano clock tower.

The cathedral at the central piazza. Alessandro and Lola are there for mass several times a week and call me a heathen every time I decline to go with.

Just a shot of one of the many streets. That's Marcello's mother in the photo waving at us.

Part of Alessandro's studio. Notice all the women there? No. Me either. I'm the only one.

Lunch. Real Italian pizza. And wine.

Dessert. Gellato. I can never make up my mind what flavor I want.

Marcello keeps making fun of me for this one. I really didn't mean to cut off his head there. But isn't the Gellato pretty? And it was SO good.

And now, Venezia. A grand staircase that overlooks the master canal. Isn't that just gorgeous?

And he puts me to work. That's the Piazza San Marco and yes, that's me in a wedding gown. Take a good long look at it because I'm certain I'll never wear one again. He wanted something dramatic and depressing here. I think he got it.

And something cheerful. That black kohl was awful to wash off.

It's quickly approaching Carnival season and just like Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Venice goes all out. That's what this costume is for, but the photos were obviously needed well in advance for the posters and so forth. It's a wonderful time of year here. Despite the often cold weather, it's so fun and crazy and I think it's the one time of year that Venice finds itself in a frenzy that reminds me of New York. All other times, life goes by slowly and with no rush.

This, I'm posting because it made me laugh. I took this photo out of Alessandro's bedroom and scanned it in. It was taken years ago, the first time I was in Venice. I look so young. And so...fat. Still, I like it.
Next time I post pictures, I'll share my pasta making adventures with you. It's one of the reasons I was so zaftig the last time I lived here.
