I think it depends on the fandom. Something that's been long-running, like ER and its fifteen seasons, is a little easier if you are writing a central character because they've gone and answered many of those questions over the years.

I can see where it would be really difficult for something on-going where the canon is still evolving or for a little less primary character that even the source creators have left vague or flat.
